CENTRAL FLORIDA (Gainesville) SWAP MEET - FEB. 21st

Ok, so not to panic you all or anything, but I'm wondering if I should still have the next swap here. My chickens contracted something from the last swap (I assume since that's the only place they were exposed) and it won't go away! I'm going to be REALLY peeved if any of them die. So far it's just runny noses mostly...a couple of them have respiratory noises or foamy eyes. If anyone has issues like this please PM me and let me know...I won't blame anyone for bringing it b/c I'm sure you didn't know, but I would really like to know what I'm dealing with. They've been on antibiotics for 2 weeks now and it's not doing anything. I'm probably going to take a nasal swap next week and have it cultured...hopefully it's something simple.

ETA: The whole point of that was to say that maybe we shouldn't have the swap here. If they're still sick I don't want to perpetuate the cycle and if they're not I don't really want them catching something else. (shrug)

Pretty much, although they aren't all affected the same. Some of them really don't have any signs but I assume they still have it, some have a bit of a runny nose, and only a couple have actual respiratory noses. A few of the younger ones have puffed up faces. None of them ACT sick though, which is a good thing. If it was something really virulent I would have expected to already have lost some. Hopefully it's a low pathogenic strain of flu or something that just needs to run its course...the antibiotics will at least keep them from getting secondary bacterial infections.

I've made sure to keep all my new babies far away from the other chickens and I always feed/water them first so I don't contaminate anything. They'll be staying inside until I sell them to make sure they don't get whatever it is.

Kelly,

What antibiotic are you using to treat your birds? Have you tried Tylan?? The stuff is Great!! I brought home a few birds from the swap and have not had any problems here .. Hope your birds all get better soon...

They're on Oxytet. in the water right now, but I'm going to get some Tylan on Monday. I'm not really looking forward to injecting all of them though...

Kelly you dont have to inject them you can put it in the water & it will help them. I dont like giving injections either so I just quirt a couple of shots into a bowl of water & give it to them that way.
