amem iopele! I hate mice and rats, and much prefer the snakes. We had a coral snake in the yard years ago. Our cats were playing with it. They're non agressive, but very venomous. Most of the snakes we see are pencil sized earth snakes. They are brown or gray on top and cream colored on the bottom. If one of the girls found one, there would be big time bird fight over who got to eat the treat!

Shortly after I posted this, my dh found a large snake in the nest box trying to eat the plastic egg we keep in there. I wasn't sure what it was so I didn't catch it. Looked in our field guide and indentified it as...a rat snake. When it comes back it will be slipped into a pillow case and relocated. Unless of course it manages to swallow the plastic egg or a golf ball, then our problem takes care of itself. My son's first question after determining non-venomous status was "can we keep it".
