We are treating our rooster for Bumblefoot in both feet. He is making a very slow improvement. His left foot is pretty bad, his right foot a little better but still not great. Originally I was treating him with Baytril, then switched to Cephalexin. I have 500 mg capsules and have been giving him 250 mg twice a day. I'm wondering if that might be too much? He weighs just a little over eight pounds. In addition to the antibiotic, we have been soaking him daily in Epsom Salts soak, Oxine soak, Veterycin, and triple antibiotic ointment.

The Cephalexin dose in birds is 35- 50mg/kg PO (orally) four times a day according to Plumb's drug handbook and clinical avian medicine.

The dose range for an eight-pound rooster would be anywhere from 125 - 180mg four times a day.

How old is your rooster and how long have you been treating him for bumblefoot?
One last question, have you done surgery to remove the infection?
He'll be three y.o. in June. A week. And not yet. Surgery is not always necessary, we are hoping he might not need it. The swelling and inflammation is gone from his feet and most of the black is gone. He is obviously feeling better, but still very lame. He does have a few spots...the worst one is on his left foot. If we decide he needs it, we will probably consult a veterinarian. I don't do surgery. :sick Thanks for asking. :)

I was thinking maybe gout, but since the swelling isnt there, it's not gout.
You can always use Tricide Neo soaks for bumblefoot cases since you dont do surgery.

That's what I was reading about is Tricide Neo. Have you had any luck with that? It's definitely bumblefoot, imo. He's got a black plugs on both feet, one is worse than the other.

Tricide Neo is enroute. I'm guessing it won't be here before next week. So two more questions if anyone knows? 1: How long can I keep him on the Cephalexin? This is day 4. It does seem to be helping in that he seems to be more cheerful every day and can use his right foot pretty well but still can't stand for more than a few seconds. 2: Should I continue with the Cephalexin once we start the Tricide Neo?

i know old post but how did this turn out for you? what helped the most. just noticed a hen with that. i lost a hen to it a year ago. spent $500...yup! and she died prettier quickly ....so i am not doing that again. i have a friend who has all the humane equipment to put her down if i am unsuccessful. however....last night i gave her septra...i have some left over since the other hen died. i had 4 doses...last one tomorrow but i have cephlex for myself due to bloodthinners i have to take for dentist etc. so....will switch to that. soak with epsom and vetiricin and neosporin. i put her in my baby pen which was empty except for one hen there...(we are going on a trip and trying to stop the last two Broody hens)so it is cleaner in there....HOPING!!!!

The tricide neo honestly probably helps the most. Its fish med so available on line but cephalexin helps too. You do have to use the correct dose and realize that cehalexin is for skin infections. Our last rooster recovered completely but we rehomed him as i didnt want him to get it again. We have a roostervwe are treating now same thing. He is almost recovered but has a new lump on his left foot
