How well will chain link fence work for fenceing? My new neighbor said we have tons of coons and if they can put there hand in the fence(not there body just reach a hand in) they can kill and drag out the chickens, and told me chain link fence wouldn't work.....

What do you all think?

I was thinking of building boxes and nailing the chain link fence to the boxes, then nailing the boxes together creating the run.

We used chainlink dog run panels for our run, it works perfectly and we added a shade cloth cover. It is not predator proof but I don't have a daytime predator problem and my chickens are locked up tight at night in a very secure coop.

I too used dog run panels of chain link....good sturdy fencing that keeps predators out! In the summer when nights are hot the pop door stays open and the chickens roost inside and ocme out in the early morn where they stay until its quite light out around 7am. then I open the pen up for them to free range and there are usually no predators around by then. My ducks and geese roam around loose inside the pen all night but the geese will alert ot anything moving about...and quite loudly so I will here them, and I always have my .22 handy in case! (we have a large pack of coyotes the roam through the area and I have NOT lost 1 chicken to them so far!....just 2 cats who were stupid enough not to come in for the night!

Oh and I use those whirly gig windmills ... the one you buy for kids to play with... at the top of the pen. It amuses the chickens and seems to keep the airbourns predators at bay!

I used 2x4 fencing for the run. I lined it with chicken wire to prevent reaching through. Chain link would be pretty much the same thing.

I am sure that the best arrangement would be 1/2 inch hardware cloth on the bottom two feet.

I use chain link also.I put bird netting over the top to keep hawks out. I put 3 strands of electric fence on the outside of fence to keep coons, possums, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, weasels, house cats,Ferrel dogs, ETC. we have A LOT of preditors here day and night. The list just goes on & on. I also use the SSS method. it seems to work great!!!

My run is chain link with chicken wire on the inside and hardware cloth up 1' at the bottom as well as skirted out to prevent anything from digging in. I also have cattle fencing and chicken wire over the top to prevent air-born and climbing pests/predators So far I close my pop door every night, that may change though at some point since I fell my run is pretty secure.
