Hi,

My husband built are very nice coop for my ladies - barred rock. We started with seven last August and are now down two four. Lots one to an opossum, one to a raccoon and not sure who got the third one. I have chain link fence around the chicken yard with a layer of chicken fence at the bottom and bird netting across the top. The chickens we have lost have been taken nights we were late getting out to lock them up. It looks like the one place predators are able to get is around the gate.

Any suggestions for how to add protection around the gate?

Thank you

I have gone to the local metal/welder shop and had him take scrap and cut down to fit in the space between the door and the post... then I took the hardware for chain link (the things that wrap around the post and have a nut and bolt to hold the chain to the post) and had pre-drilled holes in the scrap..... put the bolt through the hole in the scrap and tighten down... now the gap between the gate and post is filled with the metal scrap (about 1-2" wide and goes up to the latch)

I hope I described that well enough.

I'd attach some boards to the gate to extend into the gaps.
Use treated lumber and it will last for years

That is what I did also, only instead of scrap I used the short connector pieces for the top rail. I was mostly trying to keep the chickens in the backyard. They were wiggling through the gap.
