They take a few minutes to warm up and should be run a bit with no load to warm them up to prevent damage from rapid heating. If it does it all the time sounds like it may need a little adjustment to the carb. If it will idle fine but not run good at low to mid throttle it may need the low speed jet adjusted a tiny bit.

Thanks Chicken Rustler! You hit it straight on - once it has been running a bit, the problem seems to go away. I was just concerned since it was brand new. When you say "run a bit with no load" do you mean just warm it up a bit before actually starting to cut logs?
 
Sorry I don't know where OBX is but we were at Sandlake Oregon when that pic was taken of the bug. If ya go in the sand much get yourself a 12volt air compressor to keep in yer truck. If you take those tires down to about 20-25psi you will be amazed how well you will get around.

DH has a jeep so the compressor would really come in handy because once you go from the sand back to the pavement, it is a couple of miles to the nearest gas station to put the air back in. I see people who take the air out of their tires and ride them like that for the entire time they are there. In once respect that may be a time saver but it would seem to me that you are putting alot of wear and tear on the tires...Thanks for the tips!!
 
OK guys - this is what was wrong with my new saw according to the Stihl techs that worked on it...What do you all think?

carburetor gasket defective (turned to goo) was the way he put it and was fouling it. Seems the gaskets were replaced with a ceramic one by Stihl in all the saws as they were causing problems and the old ones had not cycled out yet. DH doesn't quite buy into that as his is way older and he's never had a problem with it but then again they may have changed the gasket make up several times in the years since he got his. He doesn't think the gasket had squat to do with it and the real problem was the carb itself being defective in the first place. In any case, I have a new carburetor, new gasket and fuel system flush all replaced under warranty.

All I can say is thank goodness for warranties, hopefully it is fixed and please don't let it snow this weekend so I can get back out and start happily sawing away again!
 
NYT Angel it could have been the gasket. this new ethanol gas is hard on 2 cycle fuel systems. you will be seeing more problems down the road. cool rides BYCers. My Trans Am is a 1979 LS6 addition. Posi trac rear. 4 wheel disk brakes and front and rear swaybars. it dont like sand but what a beast on the black ribbon. it has a big block engine 6.6. i want a 4x4 but i cant part with my car and cant afford both
 
NYT ANGL It could have been the gasket BUT I look at it as why would they replace the carb unless they found something wrong OR they have had problems with those carbs in the past and maybe used a different style. I did that on my weed eater yes it has been hot rodded too. Too much power is barely sufficent ya know !!!

fatboy My bug is nothing special just a 1641cc (built by me) stock bug trans, no suspension mods. BUT ......I do have steering brakes on the rear that alow me to lock up one wheel and pivot on it. In the grass or mud that can get a little hairy when it starts throwing the nose sideways.
