Hello, I hope you can help me out.
We have put hatching eggs under our broody hen for the first time.Yesterday (day22) we came home and 1 egg hatched - so there are still 9 eggs under the hen. There is no sign of movement with those other eggs....do you there might be any live left?

The thing is I missed to move the hen out from the laying nest....so in there there is not really a place to offer food and water to the baby as it will not be able to climb back into the nest.
We build a new hen house for that as we want to hatch more often but I read that the eggs should not be moved 3 days before the hatching date.
So we would like to move the hen with her baby to the new house but not sure what to do with the other 9 eggs....

do you have any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
Sophie

Since it's already day 23 I would go ahead and move mama and eggs, myself.

Thanks a lot! So I will move them and within the move maybe I candle the eggs? but I have no idea if I would know anything more by doing that since I have no experience :)

You can try the float test if you really wish. Take a pan of lukewarm water and put the eggs in it. They’ll float. If a chick is alive in there, the egg will wiggle on its own. If it floats dead in the water, there is no chick alive in there. I’m not sure what you would do if you did get one to wiggle.

I leave the hen alone until she brings the chick(s) off the nest. If the eggs were all started at the same time, a hen will usually not leave the nest until all eggs hatch that are going to. That chick can go three days without food or water since it absorbed the yolk, so there is no real reason or rush to get it off the nest.

But I agree with Flockwatcher. That hatch is almost certainly over.

Hello, Just when I went out to move the hen with the chick another one was hatching ...so I will leave her alone for another day.... thanks for letting me know that they live so long without food... thant gives me more patience :)
