Didn't expect to be posting in this forum so soon :( Got our chicks yesterday. Got home and the first one I picked up let out a big messy, semi-bloody stool all over me. It was the first time I had ever seen chick poo so I didn't get too riled up about it. Throughout the night we noticed she was definitely the most mellow of all of them. I have seen her eat and drink on occasion but she just doesn't have a lot of energy. I've seen her poo a couple times since and its very watery and there is no green color like the others. Today DH noticed that she doesn't open her eyes.

I did a bunch of reading here and thought it might be coccidiosis. Went and picked up some corid after work and I've gotten her to drink a little. I also put it in the water for the other chicks.

What throws me off is that she still peeps/plays a bit. Eyes always closed, but she does acknowledge the others and scamper with them, just not as much. She's very snuggly and is sleeping on my lap on a rice bag right now and occasionally perks up to make some chirps at me but they don't sound distressed. Did I diagnose correctly? Could it be something else? What can I do for her besides what I'm already doing?

Haven't even had them for 24 hours and I'm going to be heartbroken if we lose her :'(

Also, if she's still interacting with the others, do I need to keep her separated? I don't want to make her sleep alone if she's not a danger to them because she definitely prefers being with the others.

You need to get more Corid in her to be effective. You can use an eyedropper full of the corid water mixture and put a couple of drops on the side of her beak to drink. You'll have to do this 5-6 times a day. I hope you got the correct dosage.

Her breathing has become labored now. She's drinking but I haven't been able to get her to eat in several hours. I'm worried if we leave her alone for the night the outcome isn't going to be good. I'd really appreciate any additional thoughts on what I could be doing to help her :(

Just thought I'd close this up in case anyone comes across it in a search. We lost her. I nursed her from a syringe until about midnight last night but at that point it was pretty obvious she was not going to recover. I checked on her again around 2 a.m. and she was gone :(

You know, we purchased more than we really needed because we knew there was a chance we'd lose a couple but its so different to say that than it is to actually lose them once you've gotten a glimpse of their little personality. I had a stern talk with the other 4 ladies this morning and let them know they were to remain healthy and live long lives.

Figures it would have to be the one my 3yo named that got sick too, huh?

So far not a great start to my chicken rearing experience.
