Change.org/Petition to shut down my pet chicken hatchery

I don't think there is any way to change the mind of these people or show them that all of us don't just throw our roosters to the wayside. I have never ordered from a hatchery directly but am sure that I have indirectly and all my chicks have been healthy and happy since we brought them home. Also my roosters went to great homes and I am thankful that IFA still supports their roosters even after they are sold and grown up some. In any event, if this isn't in the right place, please move it moderators. I just wanted to put this out because this particular hatchery is catching a lot of flack for no good reason.

The Facebook thread was pretty good, the 'ignorants' were close to matched by those who know the facts of the matter. Surprising that the petition has almost reached 10, 000 signatures, but I expect (and hope) it fails, it's daft after all. This commenter sums it all up neatly:

The petition should actually be for the USPS. They are the ones that kill the chicks not My Pet Chicken.

I looked on Change.org and it is funny that doing a search on the word chickens brings up any number of petitions that have been started by people to get their city to allow the keeping of back yard chickens. Where do they plan on getting their chickens?

Hopefully the petition will just go away. We have all ordered from hatcheries and sometime received a couple of free chicks. I ordered 8 ducklings from a hatchery during the late winter and received them and 12 day old roosters added for warmth. Better I get the roosters and raise them, give them to friends and donate them to 4H projects in my area than the alternative they would face otherwise.

And, yes I have had a couple of chicks die once received because they could not deal with the stress of shipping. They may have also died if hatched by the hen and not been strong enough to make it in the competition of the chicken coop AND they definitely would have died in a big-chicken business that focuses on eggs and meat for the open market.

I think I will go to change.org and start a petition to end petitions.

lol no, that site has helped many!

It can be one of the few effective live channels of democratic 'people's voice' impelled movements out there.

However, perhaps you could start a petition to 're-agriculturalize' people, really just to educate them, to ensure that kids in primary or secondary school are given at least some education on where their food comes from and the how, and why, of what is done during the process. It's this exact ignorance that is a thorn in the farmers' sides and powers such foolish petitions.

I bet these people go straight from voting against pet chickens to munching chicken McNuggets that taste of all the suffering those chooks endured, never knowing the vast difference that exists in the taste of a chicken that enjoyed its life...

Dozens of people went on that thread on FB explaining why shipping chicks is reasonable yet two posts later someone is baffled why chicks can be shipped without food or water. They just need something to be outraged about. It won't change a thing,

I just picked up 23 babies from McMurray and plan on getting more in the spring. I suppose I'm a horrid, horrid person in their eyes, but don't give a hoot.

So true, unfortunately. Bet almost none of them are vegan though; perhaps they need a reminder of where their chicken meat came from to distract them. :/

I listened to you podcast. It was informative but had some incorrect information in it. Day old chicks should be shipped within 24 hours of hatching up to day 3. After that, chicks can be shipped three weeks old or later. You absolutely can ship adult chickens. It's done all the time. They make special adult bird boxes. The adult chickens are shipped with fruit and grogel for food and water.

And in my experience, adult birds handle the shipping stress way better than day old chicks.
