Hi all -
My silkies have always laid eggs that were varying shades of tan - anywhere from a beautiful creamy tan to almost a "peachy" tan. This past week tho, on several occasions, I've found WHITE eggs in the coop - not an off white, but a SNOW WHITE, just like the eggs I used to buy in the grocery store. Same size and shape as always, just WHITE. I found two more white eggs this morning.
White eggs are ok - I'm just wondering why? They're eating the same food (layer pellets, cracked corn, greens, fruit and vegetable scraps, bugs and grasses in their enclosure, etc...), they're drinking the same water, and they're on the same bedding (pine shavings) as always. The weather has been fairly cool this summer (80's during the day, 60's at night), and they're on the same schedule - I let them out between 7AM and 8AM (after neighbors go to work), and they put themselves to bed when the sun goes down (I lock the doors around 9PM) - again, same as always.
The only exception was dusting them alll for mites a couple weeks ago, and adding DE to their pen at that same time. Could this be affecting egg color? If not, any other ideas?
