After a long winter of cooping and molting along with constant sexual assault from our rooster, our hens were pretty beat up. They may also have some mites due to using the deep litter method and constant buildup of straw and fecal waste developing moisture and dampness. Needless to say this spring we cleaned out the coop and are giving it a thorough cleaning.
My problem is that we have noticed that some of our birds are laying unnormally shaped eggs. Some are tear dropped and bullet shaped. Long and pointy in appearance. Some shells are mishaped and bumpy at the pointed end. I have no clue what has brought about this somewhat sudden change. Only thing I can think of is a slight change in feed manufactures products. We are mixing cracked corn with pellet granuals and some oyster and grit mixed together. We were using cracked corn with high protein enriched additives along with granual feed instead of pellets before. Less waste with pellets and pure cracked corn. Any feedback would be appreciated on the egg mis shapes dilema.

This change in shape is probably because they haven't laid in a while (during winter) and first need to get back into the cycle. So the first couple of eggs might have some weird shapes and need some time to return to their normal shape.

Get the place cleaned up, get the rooster out of there, and improve the diet of your chickens. Older hens may lay odd-shaped eggs due to aging of the 'egg maker', or disease. Occasionally genetics may play a role in funky shaped eggs. Deworm and de-lice them. and within a few weeks you should see an improvement in a few weeks. Good luck!

Are they getting enough calcium in their diet?

Thanks guys. The rooster is going to the pot and a few others as well because its time to harvest my meat birds and make room for new chicks and other breeds. Never had a problem with the right food supplements such as calcium. They have had a mix of the best money can buy and been well fed. They are just a year old so its not their age factor either. As for mites and lice, I'm not completely sure as I can't visually see any. That doesn't mean they don't have them. I am giving the coop a thorough cleaning and delousing as suggested before the new stock is moved from brooding boxes into the coop. The egg size from my girls is never consistant. Some days small and others larger. Occaisionally I get a few wierd ones and have wondered what might be causing it. Thanks for the feedback.
