changing broomfield city code.

Thank you! Right now contacting your council rep is the best thing you can do. The council needs to hear from people in each of their wards that there is an interest in backyard chickens. It could be that there will be a future meeting that would be good to have as many supporters as possible attend, for instance when they are doing a final vote on the ordinance, and I will be sure to keep you all up to date on the current status. For now, contacting your council rep is perfect. Thank you so much!

So glad to see your post and that the city council has decided to start researching this. I have already emailed my council members in the past, but will again today. I am pretty tied up for most of Sept, but would be happy to attend a council meeting after that! I will also keep talking to my friends that may be interested and try to reach out to people in other wards. So happy to connect with you--we can make this happen!!

Does anyone know what the decision was at the Aug 28th council meeting was? Are they going to do a study or not?

They did, it sounds like it will be on the agenda for one of the October study sessions. They will be considering chickens and bees.

This is from an email that we received yesterday 9/10 that gives us a good idea of how things will move along.

Obviously, it could get held up at any one of these stops along the way, but it'd be great to look forward to getting chicks in the spring.

Thanks to everyone who has contacted their council reps! I think many of them have heard from folks in Broomfield wanting chickens and I think that will make all the difference. It would be great if they are hearing from people throughout the fall to encourage the ordinance change to progress.

Here's the response I got from one of my Council members when I asked about the outcome of the meeting. This seems to imply a shorter timeline:
>The only thing we did at the meeting Tuesday was to direct staff to gather information so that we can have a study session. I imagine we >will actually meet on it late September or early October. If we come to a consensus, it would go on the agenda for a vote with a few weeks >of that meeting.

Here is the page where you can see Council Agenda, Minutes, and video of the meetings. You don't have to watch the whole meeting. Its nicely indexed so you can jump to the part about chickens.

Hi all, it sounds like if we could find out who the "staff" is that has been directed to obtain information, we might be able to help them in some of their suggestions to the council. Ideally, we'd like to see a study set up so that it could begin early in 2013, as most folks try to get their chicks early enough that they can be moved to outside pens when the weather warms up (I know there are other options, but obtaining chicks is usually less expensive, and has the added benefit that it will open up options in case someone doesn't want to start with a full-grown flock, regardless of their reasons).

Sending up prayers that we can have truly fresh eggs next year!

In case anyone is following this thread that hasn't contacted me, the Broomfield City Council is scheduled to hold a Study Session about backyard chicken keeping on October 30th at 5:30 pm. Although formal comments will not be taken at this meeting, citizens are allowed to attend the session. We need to get organized and make sure the Council members hear from everyone who is interested in keeping chickens and that we have great representation at that meeting. Please send me a Private Message with your email address so you will get added to the group for more timely updates of the events related to this.

The Study is on the Council Agenda for next Tuesday, October 30th at 6 pm. I hope everyone can make it so we have a good showing of support. The Council meets in the Council chambers at the City and County Building, One DesCombes Drive.

Hi. I'm working on changing the law in Broomfield. The Council has directed the Staff to draft an ordinance for public review and Council vote. We need all the support we can get. If you are still interested in having backyard chickens, please contact me at [email protected].

Thanks,

Jim
