It's just cold, wet, and muddy here. I think I'm going to put a heater in the coop tonight to give everyone some extra warmth.
I hate mud.

If there's enough ventilation, no extra heat will be necessary.
All I do is a Deep pack litter, just layers of straw. The manure creates heat, as it decomposes with it. The litter is removed in spring to fertilize the gardens.

This is what I do in my main coop. The only reason I was going to put a heater in the coop was if everything and everyone was soaked. I've lost a few birds due to them going to bed wet and muddy. It was drier than I thought it was going to be out there, and most of the birds seem to be in good health (the expectation being my top rooster, who was dethroned this morning), so I just put up a tarp to block the draft.

Never lost a soggy chicken to the cold. Had lots of soggy birds that one day when it was raining out, then dropped into the 20's during the night. Unfortunate that you have though.
