Chat N Chicknfun Thread

OMG, at least the chickens pay for their own feed at this point, can't say that for any of the other animals around here..........

I am trying to decide on ONE more duck or 2....for Otto. everything I have read and heard says at least 2 females to one drake- Whaddya y'all think? I'm looking at the available pen space and thinking just one more, but if got 2.....IDK, I need help with this. Is 24 square feet per duck enough space? or would 32 sq ft per be better?
The pen ended up being a little smaller than I had originally planned, but not much. I am thinking just one.....but then it would be lonely till big enuf to go out?
Can I add just one duck to 2 already there? How big does it need to get b4 I c an throw it in with the other 2?
This is my first duck experience, So I really don't know........

TONY, how many sq ft is your duck pen? you said you have 3 right? Pekins are similar in size to the Cayugas I think, maybe even larger. I thought you had said 10x10 is your pen?

Well, I have a little time, just don't want to wait too long.....

What does your DH do Chickadoodles? MIne does many things, but mostly landscaping and irrigation.

I guess it was safe to start filling the tub, he is still not back yet so I guess there will be no door building tonight

Hey- you like it? YAY!!!!
Yeah, they have been in there for a few days now with the pond, what a pain in the ....you know what!!!
I do have water for them near their food. and ya know, I am not going to build a duck house either. I have some BIG HUGE black nursery pots from trees. I am going to just turn one of those up-side down and cut a hole for them to go into. I think then it will be easier to clean after them. They don't seem to mind sleeping in their poo, but I want to keep the area as clean as possible where they will sleep, so if I do it that way I can just turn the thing over and shovel out the used pine chips and throw more down....turn the big pot back over, voila- done.

I did find a pool pump that I had from the kids last pool, it still works, and I have been pumping out the pond with that. really helps, but have to have 2 people to prime the pump and turn on the thing. I am not using the filter, just moving the water!!!!
YAY- DH went to get stuff for a real door!!
I may get that done today, not sure if I like the idea fo the thatching. I'll do more then decide. will be easy to remove if I don't like it later. I can't afford roofing materials right now, but they are good without roofing temporarily. There is wire on the top.....

YES I do!!!
You have got it all under control!

That is THE best Idea!!! I have one of those pots as well, I think I may just have to steal your idea!
That defiantly sounds like the way to go. Easy to clean because of the plastic and so simple. I do have one problem, what happens when wind come.lol. There home will just fly away

.
I too found my ducks don't mind at all sleeping in their poop or on just bricks, seems a bit cold.
My ducks...well duck sleeps in a shed on leaves and straw, then eery morning I just flip it quickly and after a few days I just add more fresh stuff on top. Then after a week I clean it all out.
I just use leaves, cut grass, twigs etc other wise it would cost a lot to have to buy a bale of hay every month.

I have forgotten do you have 2 hens or a pair? They look great and SO big. I think I have plans to get a drake and possibly raise some ducks but would have to make a separate run for the ducks from my chickens.

That is interesting.......wow........I guess with all the fish farms, ya gotta have the feed to feed them with!!!
There are alot of catfish farms around here and Bear Bryant's son is part owner in a bunch of them around here and the Harvest Select next door to my DH's mill. LOL They do the catfish to sell to the stores and where ever.
