Chat N Chicknfun Thread

My chickens are weird. The go out rain or shine. It appears they like a nice shower and the worms the showers bring. The teenage chicken girls I have, run into the coop when it rains or the wind blows too hard. It appears the teens have more sense than the adult.

Mine are the same. Rain or shine there outside. They stand under the coop if it rains too hard. But will get impatient and come out sooner or later. They look like wet rats after a rain. Roosters tail will be dragging the ground. lol.

LOL, It would be great if there were TINY babies!!!!
They are all too cute!!!!The JG babies are fat and fluffy!!
sorry the one didn't make it, but I agree with your sis, they aren't all going to make it!! And, there could have been something wrong that you couldn't have known about!
The rest will be good, i'm sure!!

My chickens don't know they are not supposed to be out in the rain either....neither do my ducks!!!!!!!!
Silly buggers dance around when it rains, flappin their wings and all...
Speaking of......you should see them stretching out real far and flapping for like a whole minute or 2....I think they are saying Thank You for me giving them the room to stretch and flap at the same time..........

Hi Chicken Girls

Awesome. I have a small place for mine to get it but they dont. Thunderstorms and they are laying outside.

Hey- you like it? YAY!!!!
Yeah, they have been in there for a few days now with the pond, what a pain in the ....you know what!!!
I do have water for them near their food. and ya know, I am not going to build a duck house either. I have some BIG HUGE black nursery pots from trees. I am going to just turn one of those up-side down and cut a hole for them to go into. I think then it will be easier to clean after them. They don't seem to mind sleeping in their poo, but I want to keep the area as clean as possible where they will sleep, so if I do it that way I can just turn the thing over and shovel out the used pine chips and throw more down....turn the big pot back over, voila- done.

I did find a pool pump that I had from the kids last pool, it still works, and I have been pumping out the pond with that. really helps, but have to have 2 people to prime the pump and turn on the thing. I am not using the filter, just moving the water!!!!
YAY- DH went to get stuff for a real door!!
I may get that done today, not sure if I like the idea fo the thatching. I'll do more then decide. will be easy to remove if I don't like it later. I can't afford roofing materials right now, but they are good without roofing temporarily. There is wire on the top.....

Well that answered my questions. Need to read everything first. lol

I am trying to decide on ONE more duck or 2....for Otto. everything I have read and heard says at least 2 females to one drake- Whaddya y'all think? I'm looking at the available pen space and thinking just one more, but if got 2.....IDK, I need help with this. Is 24 square feet per duck enough space? or would 32 sq ft per be better?
The pen ended up being a little smaller than I had originally planned, but not much. I am thinking just one.....but then it would be lonely till big enuf to go out?
Can I add just one duck to 2 already there? How big does it need to get b4 I c an throw it in with the other 2?
This is my first duck experience, So I really don't know........

TONY, how many sq ft is your duck pen? you said you have 3 right? Pekins are similar in size to the Cayugas I think, maybe even larger. I thought you had said 10x10 is your pen?

Well, I have a little time, just don't want to wait too long.....

Yea 10x10.

Super bummed tonight.

Today was my second warm day of the year.....so lots of work to do, and you think I would be happy....but...

FIRST

I smushed one of my 6week old chicks. Broke his neck in the coop door.

TOTALLY MY FAULT, I saw him there....I was just thinking slowly.....had so much work to do....

I am trying to make myself feel better because 1. Even though he didn't LOOK dead immediately....I kinda think it was like when you cut off their head....so I am hoping he didn't suffer. And 2. It was at least an 'extra' male, so I might have ended up culling him anyway. At least I didn't get a pullet. *sigh*

SECOND

even though I DID test out my incubator before setting the eggs.... It is acting all sorts of screwy. I think it has starting breaking or something. And I am really worried that I already killed all of those lovely lovely eggs. But, if they aren't dead yet, I am not sure that I am going to be able to keep them alive with the incubator being to horrid.

And

1. I live in a small town, so nope, I can't run out and get another one, need to mail order
2. Spouse says, no mail order, if it is busted, let us just rebuild it (hear me scream at that STUPID suggestion)
3. Even if I did mail order a new incubator, I feel SO bad to go back to the lady I got these eggs from and say "I killed all of the eggs, could I have more to try again?" I guess I shouldn't care about having to say that....but I DO
4. I KNOW it is stupid...and I have incubated before (using this same incubator) and so I know that no hatch is ever 100% (OK, I guess some people get that, but I never have), but to loose ALL of these super lovely eggs breaks my heart!!

THIRD

one of my sons was a royal snot today, for most of the day, and two of the other ones had moments

The joy of life, Hey!? But I found it always gets better. Sooner or later.

OMG, sounds like my house......OR Sil's......LOL
has he ever seen a guinea? it may scare the poo out of him........LOL
to me they look like FAT vultures......LOL

There used to be some breeders in Washington (Chilean Tinamou)
Also Loyd Ure (used to be the editor of AP&WS) used to have several species of them... no idea if he ever bred any or not

I didn't read the entire thing....

I am just amazed that more aren't bred here in the US with eggs that gorgeous.

Those birds must drop like flies in captivity. And they most not be easy to breed, because I did find several news releases about "first successful breeding of whatever Tinamou in whatever zoo". Wow!

I wonder, there has got to be an easy to rase bird with totally cool eggs! Sheesh
