I love the Little Giant plastic waterer, but the red base gets brittle in the cold, especially when they're not new. The feed/farm store here doesn't always have bases (but they always have the jugs, go figure).

In desperation to give the hens something, I went to Home Depot and bought a 2 1/2 quart plastic tub-and-lid in the paint department. It's like a big yogurt tub. Then I went to the grocery store and bought a non-stick round cake pan. One half-inch square hole later, I had a new water dispenser. Total cost, about 5 bucks.

You can normally get the buckets(2 or 4 gallon) with lids from a grocery store with a deli or bakery, a deli, or a bakery for free. It's the bowls that I have trouble getting for free.
