Cheap (ha ha) chicken coop?

I think she does keep the door open during summer and has a nice fenced in yard.

It looks large enough for a couple birds but I don't see how they can get any air to breath. I would be afraid they would suffocate over night. You might be better looking for some sort of china cabinet or something from a thrift store and replace the glass with hardware cloth.

I build this coop for about $160 (maybe a little more but I think that is what we last tallied it in at, including water and food containers NEW) the coop is 4ft by 6ft and 4 ft tall. (it's build into my garage to save on material.)

It's not quiet done yet, but almost.

Granted I got the chain link dog run for free, and most the nail and screws we had laying around but the wood I bought or "found" in the dumpsters near constrution sites.

the paint was left over paint I had laying around ask around to any friend or family that just did any constrution type stuff and see if they have any left over materials.

Restores and recycle stores can be wonderful places as well.

I didn't mean she would keep them locked in it 24/7, that was more of figure of speech. Sorry if it sounded that way.

My fear is that if she has to lock them in it at night to protect them from predators I would think it would be unbearable hot without proper venilation and air movement.

Your post doesn't say if she is a newbie or not or how long she has kept the chickens in this storage unit. I am new to posting here but have been reviewing this site and others for years.

The one mistake that newbies have a tendancy to make is that they think if they have a run with a cover their chickens are safe 24/7 and there is no need to lock them in a secure coop at night and we all know that is simply not true unless the run resembles Fort Knox.

Yeah, I totally understand. I don't know her very well, it just struck me as a rather inexpensive way to go, especially if you don't build well.

But after reading all this great advice I wonder if there isn't some other way. I know we have enough scrap wood to probably build something. My husband even said so. (though he's still against having chickens to begin with)

I have an old bureau, an old octogonal train table missing its' top, and a couple of old wood doors, one old screen door, and some misc bits and pieces of old bedframes, including a metal queen one that bent. I think I have a wood pallet too.

we are truely a warped bunch of people haahaha it seems everywhere we look we see a potential chicken coop or incubator donor u know all those things hahaha but its ok im proud to be warped

When I didn't have a coop [we're building one sometime soon] We took a Plastic pond you put upside down a fairly large one and cut a door they stayed in it when it was cold and we filled it w/ hay.

Yeah I admit I am warped - everytime I see a shed sitting in a yard I think "Chickens?"
