I am wanting to buy some Blue Hen of Delaware Chickens, but I need a breeding coop first! We live in South Carolina were it gets hot and humid, but I don't really want an open air design. I can add a fan that will suck the hot air out, so I am not worried about the summers really. I would perfer under 300$, holds 3-4 hens and 1 roo, pleasing to the eye, 2 nest boxes, roosts, and a run. Does anybody have any ideas for this type of coop?

Anybody? Please BYCers!

Have you looked at the coop designs here on BYC to see if there is something you like? How are your building skills? Could you build it yourself? I don't know if you can do a coop and a run for under $300 depending on the size of the run.

I like some of the stuff on the coop designs page, but I don't know if it would be under my 300$ budget.

I am pretty good at building, and I am really worried only about the coop.

I can get a run later. On that note does anybody have any ideas?

The hoop houses look cheap to build. Since spring is coming I think they might work well. Esp. for a breeding area. Not for a brooder. Gloria Jean

I don't think I could do the hoop house.

It just doesn't seem right for me. Any other breeding coop ideas? Oh, and crazychickenncatlady: Do you have any pics of that type of tractor?

Okay so these are in progress right now.. Also I plan on using sand in them.
Its raining outside today hence the tarps! We're kind of preparing for spring I guess.

The 'Breeding pen'. Currently only housing 2 hens that are on strike.
The hutch on the end was modified from a rabbit hutch I made. It has a 2x2 shelf in it with 4 nest boxes. (The actual coop is in the backround, but its probably a couple weeks away from being finished though)

The 'grower pen' was a run that looked just like the other one but we covered it with OSB because we needed something quick and cheap, so we recycled it from another tractor and put a door on the end.

Inside view of the grower pen. I need to turn the top 2x4 that is the 'roost' so its vertical like the others. They dont like it flat. (oh and dont mind the lamp! It hasnt been on in weeeks!) one of the panels is open in the front and covered with chicken wire and welded wire, but it is currently sitting agenst the door into the other run.

This is my secure chicken housing this year. Last year I got wiped out by feral dogs/fox/bear.
