Hello, A few years ago I hatched my own silkies and ordered a few ducklings as well, but after a few shipments of ducklings that arrived dead or died within the hour, I became discouraged. However, this summer I am going to be at a camp all summer, and will have enough time to devote to ducklings, so I thought that I would try ordering again. I was thinking about getting a few blue swedish pullets, and maybe a welsh harlequin or two. I would prefer to pick up the ducklings from a hatchery as day olds ( so that they would imprint on me), but the nearest hatchery is 4 and a half hours away from me. I wouldn't have a problem ordering ducklings again, except my local postal service is extremely slow, and the shipments of poultry that I've gotten in the past have ALWAYS gotten to me on the fourth day, with most of it's cargo dead (except those darn packing peanut chicks, they always seem to live :p) I was wondering if there was a hatchery that I could get about 4 or 5 ducklings from and have it shipped overnight without having to pay over $60? If you know of any hatcheries close to Eastern Kentucky, Let me know! I'm right on the West Virginia and Ohio line. I simply cannot deal with dead ducklings again, and standard shipping seems to be the only option with many of the hatcheries. Thanks!

I'm guessing by overnight you mean express shipping, which can still take 2 days. A lot of hatcheries don't sell sexed ducklings, and most don't do small orders. I know Ideal does small orders, but they're in TX. It looks like Express shipping for ducklings would be between $30-45 to most places in the US, but finding a hatchery that does it would be harder. I don't see any hatcheries in your area, though you could try looking for private flocks to purchase from, that might be your best bet. I'm guessing even if it's not offered, most hatcheries would ship express if you asked them though.

I've ordered from efowl.com, all 15 chicks arrived alive. One of them was a little hypoglycemic but after feeding some sugar water through a syringe a few times he pulled through just fine.

I also ordered from metzerfarms.com and didn't receive the call from the post office that they had arrived until the end of the day and it was closed. But I got there next morning ASAP and collected all 10 ducklings in great health. So three days in shipping and they were still fine. Thank the flying spaghetti monster for GroGel!

Maybe if you request them send the order to a post office a little further away you can skip the extra delivery day and just drive out to pick them up. This might work. :-\ Or maybe request extra GroGel?

The man wrote the book on ducks....literally

it is very well respected hatchery.

if u are within driving distance of old fort NC pm me and I can link u with a breeder/ expert (college degrees in poultry)

(shrug) I'll drive 4 1/2 hours to get stock I want.

I've never received birds express shipping where the shipping was under $30. Then they didn't get to me any quicker.

Try a local breeder. Ask around, post a "wanted" notice at your local feed store, or ask on Craigslist for locally hatched ducklings. You should be able to find something locally if you put a small amount of effort into it.

Holderread doesn't sell Swedish.

Metzers is good. They let you buy a minimum of 2 ducklings with the option of having them sexed.

X 2 on Metzer Farms. I ordered runners from them and I'm in Florida. They arrived on the morning of day 2 safe and sound. I live near a major airport though and in a very populated area. If you are in a more rural locale that may be the cause of yours arriving late. Look locally.

Ok, thank you guys so much for all of the information. I am definitely going to look at all of the different hatcheries you mentioned
