I also realize I didn't say why the Painted Finches crushed me. I had some brought in from a breeder in Florida that had been working with them for years. She obtained them from a breeder in California. They are available in two mutations: normal (red) and yellow. Yellow hasn't been in the States in over 15 years.

Mine bred and decided to not feed the babies. I gave them to some foster societies. When I banded them I noticed the one chick with pumpkin-gold and sent the pics to my friend. She sent them to the guy in Cali and they were both furiously excited. They'd never produced one. They wen't back as far as their breeding records went to figure out the bloodlines to see if they could produce another one which they to date never have. The Societeis weaned them to early and I couldn't get them to take a syringe for handfeeding, so they died. The pair also died so I single-handedly murdered the only Yellow Painted finches in the US and their parents that carried the recessive gene.

Oh, wow. That's horrible. What a disappointment.
