Check out the fancy eggs in the store now

I saw cage free brown eggs for $5 the other day. I gave my hens a treat when I got home. I think if you do not include the fact that I also feed 4 geese and 6 roosters( 4 will be dinner) I pay roughly $2 a dozen for my eggs. If I deduct what my non usefull birds consume its considerably lower.

It says that their hens can exit to the outdoors. I'll bet you five bucks they don't. Commercial birds are so habituated to being inside a cramped house they are afraid to go out. They talk about how much they've improved their houses, what they don't talk about is reducing the number of hens per house.

No thanks. I'll stick with my backyard birds.

They are barn confined birds. They live in well ventilated barns 24/7 with the added bonus of, hey, they can go out on the fully screened in 'porch' in good weather, whenever the door or whatever is opened to that area. What's so nice and special about all of that???? No, thanks!

Kinda reminds me of "Rosie" in Michael Pollan's book, "The Omnivores Dilemma". Free range (commercial) broilers. What they don't tell you about their so-called free range birds is that they don't let them out for the first five weeks of their lives, due to the fear of their contracting an illness. They do let them out after that; for the two weeks before they slaughter them.

exactly what i was thinking, they present a lovely image, and it may be an improvement on conventional caged layers, but still factory farmed...and at 6 bucks a dozen i don't see how they are in business at all. But I guess that's the quandry of food production... how do you produce for the masses quality food and in a humane manner and still be affordable to the masses? Thats why im trying to get off the factory food train and raise as much of my own as I can. I don't think the masses really even care

Exactly why I now raise my own. My parents are so skeptical about free ranging and organic food I plan to convince them with my cute little hens!

Have you read Michael Pollan's book?

Out of the 8 commercial birds I still have, only two will go outside willingly. I'm kinda proud of those two. They've even taught themselves how to use the ramp. But it's weird. I've had them since they were 3 weeks old and they still have an aversion to being outside.

hmmm.. i havent added up the start up costs of my coop and run and all that... i have no idea what my eggs will be cost wise (when they start laying)...it may be that 6.00 a dozen will be a bargin for me...im pretty sure dh over spent on the supplies for the coop,, but at least i know my hens and eggs are healthy and I control exactly what goes into em! Its worth it
