I've always feed pelleted feeds to all my birds, large fowl and bantams. However, I have found that the Southern States pellet is smaller than the Purina. As for the chocking hazard, they need access to water. If they didn't have enough water, that is what probably caused the chocking.

Try calling the TSC and see if they will exchange the feed.

The chicken sited as having been choked to death on pellets, sorry I just can't agree.

I have seen some of the things chickens swallow, marbles, sheetrock screws, rocks, stones, snakes, whole frogs. I fed my 8 week old pullets whole big head shiners, some nearly the size of my little finger, they would gulp'em down, one piece. A feed pellet is not nearly the diameter of any of those things. Nor would I believe that any feed company, Dumor, Purena, Nutrina whatever would cast a pellet of a size that would choke a chicken. Imagine the liability, imagine the warning label on the bag.

As I stated in the thread regarding the choked chicken. It may have truly choked, but I don't believe that a feed pellet done it. Either it had "problems" or something else in it's windpipe.

I've seen them eat whole hummingbirds and mice. The suggestion that TSC 'went cheap' and the store should be avoided is ludicrous. Pellets cost the same as crumbles, and i'm sure in their lifetime they will try to eat something just a shade larger than a feed pellet

I really think you should change the title, you are bashing a name brand for no reason. Obviously you got pellets instead of crumbles. How is that Purina's fault? There is nothing wrong with Layena.

I don't think she was trying to bash Purina. I just think it kind of scared her to think that maybe her birds would not be able to eat them, is all.​

I've never had problems with pellets on any size of adult chicken, whether bantam or large breed. I prefer pellets cuz it seems as though there is less waste and much less dust to cause breathing problems.

great pic for everyone! I want to start the pellets for my girls, there seems to be much LESS waste! I know my Pekin loves the pellets most!

It's the same feed, the crumbles are just ground pellets. If you're stuck with a bag of pellets and don't want to feed them, just find a way to bust them up. You can run them through a blender or a grinder.

After I built my own feeder out of a plastic 5 gallon bucket and an 18-inch plant pot saucer, I haven't had ANY waste of crumbles. The chickens just don't bill the crumbles out like they used to....

As far as those people who said they choked on the pellets I have to agree twentynine.

Not being rude.....however saying your local TSC is dumb I don't think presents a fair arguement- I know you quoted that but I have to disagree completely. It could have been human error, or a case of just not reading the label. I wouldn't go as far as to tell people not to buy from a TSC because of that.

And as far as calling to exchange even if you didn't know that pellet existed, it is unfortunatly the consumer that needs to be educated, just like anything else when purchasing something, no matter how unfair it seems. I dont think they will reimburse you for it if it already has been opened. And if has been sitting in your barn or coop, liability wise I can't imagine they would be able to take it back. I myself have purchased feed thinking it was one thing and got something as you said I didn't even know they carried. Lesson learned and I blame no one but myself for it. But this is why we are all here is to help educate each other and learn.

I have Agway and just a locally family owned grain mill. They call the layer feed pellets, that is standard around here. Crumbles you have to request and I know the local family owned does not carry it. As far as they are concerned Crumbles are only for baby chicks ( not my opinion, the grain mills)

I have D'Uccle's that eat those pellets with the big girls with no problems.

And I don't think anyone had the intention of making you feel bad. But the way the title came off made it seem like the Layena was harmful, that is why people were upset. Lots of people on here that love their babies
