Glad to finally sign on with byc after skimming around for months :] We're a new backyard farm, home so far to seven 3.5 m/o Black Australorps, a pair of black lionheads, an indoor Pionus, and a foxfaced little dog.
In the spirit of small urban flocks, we keep a low profile and good terms with the neighbors. Luckily chickens are common in our hood, and our one accidental roo's been the most charming and soft-spoken little thing, he may get to stick around for the long haul. Two amongst our household are vegetarians, so the agreement is: chickens are for eggs; I get my own quail or ducks for meat.
I prefer the idea of native gamebirds, but Coturnixes sound so much easier than bobs or grouse that I'm likely going to pick some up this weekend. I'd also like to find some Nankins to help out with brooding, since all this unpredictable weather makes me hesitant to rely on incubators. Anyone in MI ready to say goodbye to a couple non-standard Nankin hens? Next year I hope to add a handful of Muscovies and a pair of Sebastopols, so I'm hoping to get a sense in the meantime of who around me has got what.
Looking forward to digging into this community, thanks to everyone so far for posting such great and useful stuff!
P.D. Saludos a mi gente, compañer@s Latin@s agricultores!
