Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Hi and thanks for the reminder! We've been super busy, traveling and of course "chickening" with our 9 hens. I'm actually about to post a question about one of my hens who is very aggressively protecting phantom chicks! She skipped being broody and thinks she has chicks but we have ZERO chicks. So she was running around all beefed up aggressively attacking and getting attacked in return. She's been in my laundry room in a crate for 3 days now with no signs of backing down. :( Funny that she's not aggressive towards me tho. Anyway, I am at my wits end and can't find anything like this in any of my chicken care books. Anyone ever have this before?
Thanks for checking in. These folks are very welcoming, and can help with broody issues.

Hi, all!

Thanks for checking in! Yeah, we have just been busy.

Our duck duck goose crew just celebrated their second birthday with watermelon. 🍉 They are all doing well (except the boys have been over-sexing the girls more this year).

Last season, saddles worked pretty well to protect the ladies, but this season the drakes seem to be more active. Therefore, we have been separating the fellas from the ladies for a bit to let the girls have a break and grow back their feathers. (We always separated them at night so the girls had a break, but now half the yard and the deck has one group, with the pool and other half the yard with the other group. About halfway through the day, we switch sides.)

Other than that though, all is well and everyone is having a grand time - even our “Beaky” Big Bird (our gander with angel wing) who is full of personality and acts as a guard goose for the crew is living the dream and seems unworried about his angel wing.
Thanks for the update!

It sounds like you have a good system for controlling the over active drakes!

We have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Of course, life gets busy, so I was thinking it would be fun to start a thread welcoming some of our peeps we haven't heard from in a while.

If that's you, come say hello and let us know what you've been up to. :)

(if that's not you, feel free to invite peeps you haven't seen in a while and say hi to those that post here)
Hey guys, sorry I've been missing so long. Lots of family stuff going on. Currently have my eldest duck Harlee sleeping on my bed as she can't walk, and my little Cayuga Shadow decided a few weeks ago that he no longer wants to sleep outside with the big boys, so has a cat carrier in the house for overnight!! Lol 😆 🤣

It is good to hear from you!

Enjoy the house ducks.

Hi everyone! It’s been a rough couple of years and we are now on attempt #3 at our flock. The foxes were particularly brutal but the run has been reinforced and I no longer have any illusion that my girls can free-range, even for short periods. Each flock got a little bigger because chicken math and we’re at 6 now. The latest flock officially made it to the one year mark in March and are happy and thriving!

Happy chickening!

Do you want to write an article about what you did to predator proof you coop and run? It might be very helpful to others in the same situation.

Hello all! I am still active, but sometimes don't sign in when researching! What have I been up too? Well, this is my first year of hatching my own babies from MY babies. Trying to establish a strong marans line, olive egger and easter egger line! Here's some pics from this year so far.
