Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

The farm's been keeping me busy since the solar eclipse! May was brutal with all that rain, and whacking back the weeds is no picnic either. But on the bright side, I hatched two incubators full of chicks!

I've already harvested seven quarts of green beans, snacked on some zucchini with a sprinkle of parmesan (so good!), and I'm still picking blackberries straight from the bushes. June was a productive month for canning too - two flats of blueberries are ready to go! Strawberries are on sale (2lbs for $3.13!), so I might have to get canning again soon.

Winter hay bales arrived today, just in time. The 4th of July was a blast! Topped off a ten-hour cooking marathon with a delicious meal with family. We beat the heat by staying cool in the AC until 6 pm, then enjoyed some fireworks.

Speaking of heat, it's no joke! My mornings start early with chores while the dew is still on the ground. By 9 am, I'm calling it quits and taking cover. This heat is dangerous, and I'm not messing around.

Keeping my feathered friends cool has been a priority. Frozen blueberries, cantaloupe, peas, peaches, and watermelon are on their daily menu. So far, so good! I've only lost two hens to the heat and humidity this year. I love my chickens dearly, and I'm doing everything I can to keep them comfortable. Clean water and bleached buckets every other day seem to be doing the trick, along with their awesome shade tarp. ☀️

Hope everyone else is having a great summer!

Hi
I'm still here, but up to my eyes in it. We've no birds at the moment 'cos a pine martin decided it was hungry and broke in and killed the lot. Not nice !! We are looking to start again when I have sorted the coop (which I thought was secure).
Pine Martin are wily and nimble assassins for sure! Sending all the best wishes on your next attempt.

Hey chicken friends! I spent 8 months traveling around the USA in an RV with my family and now we're settled down in a new Idaho house. We're rebuilding our homestead and my chicks are now 3 months old! I have Bielefelders, Multipak Layers (a Cream Legbar cross), and a Plymouth Rock. Now that I have chickens again I'm sure I'll be spending more time on here again! :)
Thanks for the awesome update!

Good job and keeping the chooks alive in the heat!

We have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Of course, life gets busy, so I was thinking it would be fun to start a thread welcoming some of our peeps we haven't heard from in a while.

If that's you, come say hello and let us know what you've been up to. :)

(if that's not you, feel free to invite peeps you haven't seen in a while and say hi to those that post here)

Welcome back! Traveling around the US in an RV sounds like quite the adventure. Congratulations on your new house and flock, I look forward to updates! Happy homesteading!

How was the eclipse? Were you in the path of totality?

May was brutal with all that rain, and whacking back the weeds is no picnic either.
I can relate! So much rain here too, and weeds were out of control!

But on the bright side, I hatched two incubators full of chicks!
:loveWhat did you hatch?

Glad you had a good 4th.

I hear ya. It's not quite as bad here. Here I'm calling it quits around 11.

Sorry for your losses. :hugs

Thank you for your messages.
We've been extremely busy since, I was last on BYC. Clearing our 70 acres, trying ti build our home and caring for animals and gardening. Sadly I've had 3 of my girls die last year one egg bound and 2 by skunk. So that ment making sure the other 4 wouldn't suffer the same fate. This spring I got 4 new chicks to add Cinnamon queens. They are quite the handful but so fun. We are now introducing them to our 3 lavenders and our goldlace. Now it's tome to construct a new coop for our 8 girls instead of 4 So that's what we've been up So far. This site has been so great for helping me learn about my girls, thank you so much.
