HelloWe have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Of course, life gets busy, so I was thinking it would be fun to start a thread welcoming some of our peeps we haven't heard from in a while.
If that's you, come say hello and let us know what you've been up to.
(if that's not you, feel free to invite peeps you haven't seen in a while and say hi to those that post here)
Welcome back! Does she require any special care?Hello everyone, it's been awhile. I've still got my chickens and they're doing fine. Here's my crossbeak hen after her bath. I took her in last year when she was a baby because her previous owner wasn't going to be able to care for her. She's very clingy and has this horrible habit of launching herself at my face at the worst given moment so she can perch on top of my head. It was cute when she was little but now i fear for my life lol![]()
Hello, thanks for reaching out. We are still involved in chicken care and just received a shipment of 12 fancy babies, including one mini rooster Belgian D’Uccle, 4 Cochins, 2 Wheatens (olive eggers) 3 Sage Gem bantams (green egg layers), and 2 Blue Steele bantams (blue egg layers). They will be introduced to my existing mixed flock of 6 yr old Brahma/Cochin/Polish, 4 yr old Silver laced barred rock/Black Stars, and the 2 year old pullets that are adorable faux Mohawk offspring of my PolishXBlack Stars. My big girl Fifi is broody and will adopt when chicks are strong enough. We have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Hello! It's great to hear from you. Wonderful pictures, thanks for sharing them.Hello
We've been swamped with new property happenings and some health challenges over the last several months. We bought and moved onto two acres. We are living in a small rv until we can build our home. Life gives you a few new hurdles you weren't expecting but we are slowly but surely pulling through. Our chickens love our very small(under 500 people) town. We love it too! Sorry it's been a long while. We have cows, horses, lamas and other chickens and geese for neighbors)
Welcome back! I'd love to chat with you about dealing with bumblefoot & egg binding.Hello, thanks for reaching out. I’ve also gotten very good at removal of bumble foot granulomas, and stuck eggs from egg bound hens, after conference with local avian vet due to losing one of my 5 1/2 yr old Cochins to prolapsed cloaca in spring of 2023. I can advise on aseptic technique, how to hold the hen and carefully crack bound egg for complete removal. Warm sugar water solution reduces inflammation. Vetricyn spray and chlorhexidine good for cleansing. Typically there is a soft shelled egg stuck behind bound egg that must come out within 24 hours. Here are some pix of new babies plus Millicent recovering from her procedure to remove bound egg, and soft shell egg that followed. Hugs to all chicken folk out there!![]()
She has to eat a special mash. I have to mix in either peanut butter or raw egg in with wet chicken feed so that it's sticky enough for her to be able to pick it up on her own. I do consider it a miracle that she is able to eat on her own, from what I've seen, most crossbeaks with that advanced of a deformity seem to need to be exclusively hand fed.Welcome back! Wow, peanut butter or raw egg, that's very clever! The other day I noticed that one of my chicks has a cross beak, so I think I will try that! She has to eat a special mash.
