I have no one to blame but myself for having too high of hopes and for wasting my money on overpriced 'mixed surprise ducklings', but I am so disappointed in what came. I ordered 7 surprise duckies, 5 female and 2 straight run. I ended up getting 3 female pekins, 2 female buffs and SR mallards.

I currently have blue swedish and giant french muscovys for their beauty, rarity, and fun-ness, and khaki campbells and golden 300 hybrids for their eggs.

Was hoping for a fun or odd assortment to mix everything up but ended up with 3 of the most common, boring duck breeds out there, making them way overpriced in the bargain. Metzer farms had about 20 breeds of ducks and all were hatching at the time of my order.
As they are female, the pekins will be useless for meat and from what I've read they are average/below average layers. Same for the buffs? And the mallards are as common as they get.

Anyways I am obviously a bit put out, and all is my own fault for not picking out specific birds.

Can someone help me see the bright side of these breeds? Right now I am leaning towards selling them at a loss and finding something more neat/useful in terms of egg laying etc. Won't the pekins basically be eating a ton and producing few eggs? And aren't mallards skittish and runty? I don't know much about buffs other than they are buff.

Never doing surprise birds again. I was dreaming of maybe a runner, a rare breed (welsh harlequin, saxony, cayuga, silver appleyard, swedish etc), or what I already had perhaps to thicken the breeding stock, and a few useful ones as far as proficient layers. Obviously that was unrealistic.

Tell me I am being pessimistic and silly and these are great and sensible birds to have around until they die naturally! LOL

They're DUCKS. They are all fabulous creatures. Everyone raves about Pekin personalities. Mallards are gorgeous. Buffs are great all around ducks, from what I've heard.

I can't imagine being disappointed. Get to know them. I was planning on getting those breeds in the future because I've read such good things about them.
I like most ducks quite a lot, but am certainly still disappointed with the mallards and pekins. Although I've found that I don't like khaki campbells after having about 20 of them lol. Planning to sell mine soon. Maybe it is just mine but their eggs are very small, smaller than my chickens, and they are as skittish and plain looking as can be.

South east Texas here!
Dang it. I'm in California. I would've bought them. In a heartbeat.

Give them a chance! They may surprise you! I choose my breeds for similar reasons. I don't have 2 of the same breeds for that reason (well, I do have 2 Silkie chickens).

I asked BYC what breeds I should get, the OVERWHELMING majority of the replies were for Pekins. The only reason I didn't get one was because I heard they have leg issues, but I should have ordered one. Regretting it now....

my pekins were super sweet and so much fun with way more personality than I thought a bird like that could have, they were like feathery puppies, I loved every nibble and snuggle. I might be weird but I think buffs are really pretty in their plain-ness. Welsh harleys and silver appleyards are my top picks for aesthetics but I'd also be happy with buffs or saxonies, I think they look kinda...elegant? Probably not a word ducks hear a lot 😅

personalities depend on how you raise them, not the breed! i have pekin, khaki, and rouen and they are the sweetest ducks ever ❤️

Pekins are not actually meh layers. They are fairly decent. My pekin lays the most consistently out of my flock. I think my khaki just started to lay, so that may change. Every breed has it perks. They all have their unique personalities.

You also need to spend a lot of time with the ducks, hand feeding and such for them not to be skiddish. My khakis are not skiddish, but fairly fearless. They are very high energy and like to zoom around sometimes.
