So my husband went to a local feed store and told them he wanted lime for a chicken pen to keep down flies and smell safely around the chickens. He was given a bag of chemical hydrated lime. He applied it to a chicken pen that was empty yesterday but we wanted to put 8week old chicks on it today! Is it safe? I realized it may be wrong stuff because I read to use the gray colored lime not the white. He was already halfway through putting it out before I saw it! What can we do?

Perhaps wash it down well with water and then put plenty of bedding down when it dries. Yes.... the hydrated lime is not what you want to use around livestock.

There are two different kinds of lime.

Hydrated lime, slake lime, or "burn lime"- This is pure white. Hydrated lime is very caustic, so the bag will have a warning on it. This is the kind of lime you use for white wash . This lime will burn you and your livestock. Do not use it on the floor. Do not breath it.

Agricultural lime, "ag lime", "garden lime", "barn lime" or dolomite- This lime is gray and can be used to spread on the floor of your barn. This is safe for you and your livestock. It will not burn.

Thank you for you reply. Ok we watered it in last night. So how long should I wait before putting 8 week old chicks on it? If we put down hay or something it will be OK then to put them on it today?
