Chic Chick 'Bator *UPDATED*

I made one from a smaller igloo cooler. I can incubate around 9 eggs at a time in it. I set my first attempt a couple of hours ago. We'll see how they do! I did a mod on my tstat, by drilling several holes in the plastic. This allows more air to travel in the tstat, thus making it a bit more sensitive. Last night it held 99.3 degrees. Today it's holding at 100 +/-. I'll post a few pics later.

Thanks for the idea MissPrissy!

I'm very excited! I got this box from the aquarium/pet store - for free!

and my lamp/thermostat/bulbs etc. at Home Depot. The adaptor, fan, and hardware cloth, we've got around.

I haven't had eggs or birds before, but the directions and experience in this thread are so comprehensive, I really think I can build this and make it work. X your fingers for me!

I hope to make some ducks!

Such an excellent find!

I used to work at Petsmart in the fish dept., and even so it never occurred to me to visit our local pet store for a box!
I'm fortunate enough to have given my mom and dad for Christmas some Omaha Steaks and those boxes are THICK! My mom is bringing it to me this weekend and I'm planning a hatcher. That's two Omaha Steak Box Bators for me!

This next one will have a much bigger window.

Mine's been up and running for my very first hatch. I had one hatch on Friday morning, and another is zipping as we speak!

I'm gong to change the water bowl to an ice cube tray, as this can create more surface area of water fairly easily.

here's the turning device. it's a small piece of 1/4" luane board fastned to a 1" dowel. The smaller dowels are to hold a carton.

And here's our first chick!

I have a couple questions about the fan I've got.
First - is it too big?

And if the size is ok, then question 2: it has 4 different colored wires coming off it. Black, Red, White, Blue. So what do I do with white & blue?

thanks much! And, I am way impressed with the moosecountry egg turning device!

On the 12v adapter, it should only have two wires. The Fan SHOULD have some sort of plug at the end of it. What I did, was simply put the wires that matched color in the slot of the plug, then I plugged it in the wall. The first combination didn't run the fan, so I tried another and, bingo. Then I just wrapped the plug with electrical tape.

That fan does look huge!! If you get a 9 volt adapter, it should run the fan slower, which might be a good thing

Aha! Yeah the 12v knocked me across the room & through the wall & was audible 2 rooms away

But! AwesomeHusbandOfAwesomeness had a 4.5v adaptor left over from an old beard trimmer and I think this one is just right, it's a constant, gentle puff that should circulate really nicely in the closed box. Yay!

This is the best project. Here is how it makes me feel:
