Chic Chickies

:welcome
Nice to have you here!

There’s a forum for predators and pests you can check out
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/predators-and-pests.13/
There’s also a forum for coops and runs of all types and sizes
Without knowing about your setup or predators in your general area - a few general safety precautions are
No chicken wire. Use hardware cloth, no larger than 1/2 inch
Use a barrier under/ around tour run/coop to prevent critters from digging under
You may need some kind of lock or clasps to keep raccoons from opening simple latches (and possibly keep 2 legged creatures out as well)
Consider aerial predators….. I have a large fully roofed run that the chickens have access to at all times, they can free range the big fenced in yard when I am home. The yard has shrubs and trees and a couple of decks and a shed to take cover as needed and the fence keeps any roaming dogs out

Thank you! We are in the central
Coast of California area. Definitely have raccoons, coyotes and hawks. Live on a mostly fenced in ranch, but I love the idea of the girls getting to free range when I’m home and if not having a large predator safe run attached to the coop. Wish the hubby was construction savy. 😅 At least we won’t have to worry about weather.

Hi! Welcome to BYC!:frow

I have a run attached to my coop, but will also let the chickens free range when I'm home and can watch over them, especially since all of my racoon experiences and most of my coyote experiences are at dusk or later. My dog also helps chase off the hawks and anything else in the daytime if I'm not there.

Hope this helps!

Welcome! Oh babies are so adorable - if you have photos please post them. This is a lovely site for all sorts of information.

Many of us have predator issues and worries, and as you read along you will get some great ideas.

If you're familiar with using computers and phone/tablets you can use the search button in the upper right corner and do a quick search for topics on keeping your new feathered friends safe.

Again WELCOME!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Some cute little nuggets you have! Thanks for sharing!

The links posted above will be very helpful for you. If you have questions about other things, hit the Forums tab, find one that comes close, and post away.

We're glad you're here!
