Came downstairs to discover a sopping wet, freezing cold two day old chick in the brooder. She was lying on her side, barely alive. She didn't fall into the waterer; it looks like there was a tsunami and she got the brunt of it. (I suspect a cat jumped on top of the cage, shaking it hard, and a wave of water sloshed out, hitting her - there was water all over the bottom of the cage but waterer was not turned over and the other 4 chicks were perfectly dry.) I dried the chick and held her under heat lamps and she made it. She's eating and drinking, but is lethargic and her eyes are closing a lot and she's napping a lot. The tsunami was almost 48 hours ago. What should I be doing for her, if anything? Everyone else is healthy as horses, darting about, but she is quiet and is looking like she's going downhill. I just fed her some Polyvisol; should I put electrolytes in the water? I fear maybe her lungs were just whacked by the water and it's not something that can be helped, but if anyone has any ideas, please share them. Poor little thing - she was totally fine until this happened. Afraid to give too much Polyvisol to one this young; anybody have any idea of how much is too much, or how often she should have a drop or two? These chicks are only 6 days old. Thanks!

I'll send a prayer her way!

We just lost a chick from a shipping injury.. and I too am new to chicks, so I'm no expert... but I will say that every time I gave the injured chick the electrolytes she would perk up for a little while. So, that might help with the lethargy.

Well, she is still with us - she does move around, walks around and I've seen her eating a bit - but she is definitely way smaller than the others and does not look robust in the least. I haven't seen her drinking on her own (not to say she isn't, but I haven't seen it) so am still giving her water via a needle-less syringe. I put sugar in the water yesterday but discontinued that today and diluted some Polyvisol into her water. Maybe she'll make it - she certainly doesn't seem inclined to die, though she looks fairly shaky. Tried to get her to eat mashed up egg yolk with yogurt and a bit of pear juice, but no luck. She is eating a TINY bit of chick starter - it's as if she wants to eat, but can't quite force herself. She falls asleep next to the feeder, with her tiny head in the feeder. Hope she makes it and guess I'll keep up with the water until I see her drinking normally. Her hatchmates are eating like horses and charging around at full speed. Curious to know what damage her near drowning experience did, exactly.

Chick is recovered - she made it! Eating, zipping around with the others, totally normal (though certainly a bit smaller.) Never underestimate the power of water - kept her hydrated and did dilute Polyvisol into a few of the water feedings. Very glad that this wee fighter survived.
