So I have 4 week old chick attack by I assume the mum there are 6 other chicks with her. Her skull is very exposed, I was gonna dispatch but she’s still responsive to sound, eating, drinking, just can’t open eyes right now so doesn’t know what to do. Obviously I wanna give her a fighting chance but I’ve forgotten what to do for a wound like this. I don’t know if I should dap with salt water and a q-tip or try anything else or just leave the wound to do its thing? I’ve made electrolyte water and mushed an apple up which she demolished. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Am in the uk for any product recommendations.

You can use neosporin ointment on the wound for a few days as it heals. Make sure it does not get infected and keep her away from other chickens/chicks.

Otherwise just keep up the electrolytes and food. If she is still eating and drinking on her own she should be fine. Hopefully without any sort of brain damage.

When I have chicks like that, I don't do anything for the active wound apart from maybe sticking a makeup remover pad on top to help it clot. I put them in a safe, quiet area and just monitor. As long as the skull is intact and her eyes as well, she should be just fine with very minimal scarring once fully healed. I had one that had a wound just like that who was a week old at most (she forced her head through wire walls and scraped all her skin off her head and neck) and now at about a year, all she has to show is a hair thin scar across the back of her head. Usually her new feathers cover it up too

thank you guys for messaging, just thought I’d give an update, the chicks doing fine, the mum done the same to another chick so there both healing together and the mum is back with the adult birds where she’s started laying eggs again.. I won’t be letting her go broody next year.
