I think this is normal so I'm just posting it for entertainment value (and hopefully I dont find out otherwise!). The biggest of our three chicks loves bathing in the pine shavings. She digs herself a little hole and just has at it, pine shavings everywhere. And the other two helpfully enjoy cleaning her up after. We did attempt some sand in a small container but that resulted in three chicks determined to eat all the sand..

Aren't they cute!

I give mine a pan of dirt with a plug of sod, sometimes sand is mixed in too.
Chick(en)s eat dirt and sand. Likely your chicks ate the sand as a source of grit. Have you supplied them with some chick grit (crushed granite) free choice?
