So sorry about your chick. I know it's heart breaking. I don't know why this happens but I've seen it in two breeds so far, sultans and buff orps. If the chick is late to hatch, my few experiences say it's due to the beak being crossed. It just can't pip out well.

I would put the chick down personally. And I do not say that to be cruel or say it's life is worth nothing. I say that because I kept a cross beak chicken once, he did not have the missing eye and was not as seriously cross beaked as your chick is. But as he grew older his beak got worse and worse. He slowly was starving to death. We assisted feeding and did some major mods to his beak to try and help him be a normal chicken and we did lengthen his life, but the morning I found him dead in the coop my heart was totally broken. I loved that bird so much.

You can raise special needs birds but it's a commitment and I can guarantee at the end of it you will be heart broken. The bird would become so special to you that when the end comes...It destroys you.

Hello everyone, little update on the chick. First, we decided to name him/her Pirate. For obvious reasons, Pirate is doing well but is pretty weak and considerably larger than the other 2 and i think the reason Pirate is missing the eye and has a misaligned beak is that Pirate was too big and there was no room in the egg and the beak had to be misaligned so Pirate can fit and then lost the other eye for the beak to have more room. Pirate is drinking a bit of water if dropped on the beak and eats if you put the food in the mouth. I hope Pirate will live a long and a happy life.

Hi there, wondering how this chick did? I had one hatch with a scissor beak and only 1 eye.. it hatched unassisted.

I also have a crossbeak, she is 5 days old..I crush up her crumble into powder and mix it with egg until it is like playdoh then roll it out in tiny little pieces that look like torpedos and push it in her mouth.she eats it very well.on Facebook there is a group called crossbeaks and poultry..there r several groups like that on facebook.they show u how to care for your little baby.u should check them out.they saved my babys life..Thank you for giving that little Baby a chance at living
