Is this normal? If not what is going on and what should I do? I believe it's the umbilical cord. But ive also seen prolapse with vent or umbilical cord. This is our first time hatching from eggs so I'm just trying to make sure it's normal. Chick was hatched completely yesterday evening but started process at about 1am night b4. It is up moving around making normal noises ect. Thank you for your help and any advice if I do need to do anything.

I am not an expert so I hope someone can come along and confirm this. I just wanted to get you an answer ASAP.

That does appear to be an umbilical cord and you do not want to do anything to it. As I understand it, doing so could seriously harm or kill the chicken. It will resolve itself in a day or two.

yeah, ive even seen them dragging afterbirth for a couple of days .. id say the main thing to prevent is other chicks being able to peck at it, and yes i have seen bleeding and death result from that specifically ..
