Chick Breed I.D.?

Cute chicks! I could be wrong, but I don't think your black chick is a Barred Rock. These were my two BR chicks...

Vent sexing is pretty easy. I actually stubbled onto it while dealing with a case of pasty butt. Lift the tail so that the vent opens. At the top of the opening a male chick will have a little bump, no bigger than a tiny pimple. Females do not have the little pimple bump.

Hope that helps. Also, I thinks there is a video floating around the forums of Mike Rowe at McMurry Hatchery and they show him how to vent sex. I just couldn't tell you where to find the video.

Good luck.

Well, the big chick went back, so too late now. I found out I may finally be able to get a Rhode Island Red tomorrow!

Like I said "mystery chicks"... omg... I thought this would be so easy to buy the breeds I wanted, ha!

Maybe the black one is black sex linked chick? All black with white on the tush underneath...

Well, I talked to a local chicken expert and he's narrowed it down to both a black, and gold, sex linked breeds. Now I know, I hope....

I added a "nest" made of a small, clean washcloth, their new fave spot to sleep. I figured it might remind them of their big mama who left....

I wouldn't discount it being an Australorp. They are popping up everywhere these days.

Too bad on the Hamburg. I do see that mine are quite skiddish. Not a favorable trait, but we will deal with it.

Good luck on the RIR. As for me, I won't have them. Had them growing up with my family and they were always the nastiest things to us kids along with the Lakenvelder roos. NO thank you.

Best of luck in all.

Yes, I can see where mine does look like this one-

They're pretty and supposed to be good here in this climate...

Sarah, my bigger gold chick (who I thought was a Buff Orpington) seems to be sprouting some rust feathers. She was supposed to have been a brown leghorn originally, not I'm not sure. Any ideas? I put several pics here-
