Chick breed recommendations (and possible rooster)

Thank you everybody for your stories and recommendations! It has helped narrow down which ones we are going to be getting this time around. I love to hear 1st hand stories from chicken owners than to go by what a google breed search will tell me.
You guys are the best! Thanks so much! :celebrate

Id love to have a rooster. I really enjoyed our RIR roos. They were friendly towards me but hated my son and my dog so i got rid of them. How long did u have your BO roo?
He actually just was taken by a fox, but he was about a year old. He was matured by then, very large and I loved him. My BO was always the first in the flock to see me and come running to me for treats with the flock close behind. It was very adorable to see this big golden rooster run especially since he was about 23" tall. My BO also would run over to hens (my birds all 100% free range cage free) to collect his hens and bring them to the rest of the flock if they traveled more then he liked. I actually went out and bought 3 more BO cockerel chicks when he passed because he made such an impression on me. My 2 previous roosters (Plymouth barred rocks) have always been extremely good with kids and my dogs and were very protective with the hens. When the previous PBR we had died from attacks we actually found blood in the snow from such a fight.

Hi! I am close to Bowling Green too. (Like 40 mins away) is there a hatchery you prefer or a local place you get your chicks? Thought about ordering from TSC again but wondering if you have any recommendations since we are in the same area.

I don't know of any breeders. I'm going to order mine from Valley Farms Hatchery next month. They are a small family run farm and have a good rep.

Thats so sweet! I think I may take my chances with getting a BO roo this time. I would absolutely love it if I had a Roo that friendly.

Never heard of them but now I will look into them! I would prefer my money to help out other families. Thanks for the recommendation! :)

Get a couple barred rocks! of my EE, RIR, BO, Cochins, Orpingtons, welsummer, cuckoos, Sikies, GLW, NH, turkens....and 1 turkey lol the barred rock girls are my friendliest. always curious to see what im doing in the garden, always running up to me when i open the door, they usually break the ice for the others to come up to me. they dont lay as well as my RIR but theyre not standoffish like my RIR.

I think im going to get a straight run of Buff Orphintons (or maybe lavender), then get some Plymouth Barred Rock hens, and still debating on if I want EE's or Wyandottes. I might have someone else choose for me because knowing how I am ill choose both! Lol
EEs lay more than wyandottes for me. and are less skiddish. if u get them as chicks they are fun to watch as their plumage changes. they may look like similar chipmunks to start but they feather out different! these and olive eggers are the only ones i hatch on my own lol i like surprise of feather and egg colors!!!
