Chick brooder setup

I'd probably open the door when they are around 3 weeks old. The reason I don't say sooner is because they might not be able to go back up the ladder.

Or maybe while using indoors I could make a bottom and use the larger outdoor portion for a biggger area of about 10 square feet and put the ladder away...

Yeah, the ladder is a bit steep for little legs. May need to prop the bottom end up with a brick or block of wood to reduce the angle. I'd open it up at about 1 to 2 weeks of age, weather permitting. You don't want to have it open on a rainy, windy day and have a chick get 'lost' and chilled.
