Chick Days Rant

We have two TSC's within about 10 minutes of my house, one really doesn't know anything about the chicks, ducklings, or rabbits they carry. The other think they know all about the animals they have.

I choose the one that admits they don't know simply because they really care about the animals... They will admit to not knowing what they are, but they begged me to take the lone duckling that was there because it was the last one and all the girls that worked there came to say goodbye to it. They also allowed me to get fewer than the 6 bird minimum, didn't try to force medicated feed (they have both medicated and non), and had me help a few people who were looking at the chicks. They have four bins set up with plenty of room for them to run around in, they were very clean, and I didn't see a single unhealthy chick slowly getting stomped to death.

The other TSC I had been calling to determine when they were getting more ducklings, we called and they said there were supposed to be there on a Monday. Not there. Call the next day, nope, finally we call Wednesday and the girl that picked up freaks out because the PO called her that morning and she forgot to send someone after the chicks who were already two days late. I got there as they were putting them in the brooder. No new ducklings, all they got was some more pullets. I wanted a few more chicks (I am working on a project for some preschoolers, showing them chicks at different ages). I had been able to explain that I already had chicks in the brooder at the other TSC and they let me just grab what I wanted. The manager here told me I had to get six, she didn't have a clue why I was being so picky (some of the chicks were not doing well), and she wouldn't let me put the two ducklings I picked out in a box with a chick (since I only wanted one or two chicks)... I was getting aggravated, if I hadn't really needed these birds for a project I would have given her the ones I had picked already and left... I was appalled that the brooders, especially the one with ducklings, had not been cleaned since I was there days before... The ducklings were filthy, which is probably why there were still more than half of the original birds there. I have already decided I would not get anymore chicks from that store in the future... two of the chicks I got that day died within 24 hours...

Now its starting to get too hot!! lol

I went to TSC and looked in the bin full of little brown ducklings. How cute! I asked the guy, "what kind of ducks are they" he said "they're mallards" I said "no, they're not mallards. Mallards have yellow markings and little lines by their eyes" he sighs this deep sigh like I have no clue what I'm talking about and says "well they don't look like that YET!"

I have a random question, my TSC is an hour or so away. So we don't go often unless we NEED something, or just feel like going for a drive. Anyways, do ALL of the TSC stores have a 12 chick minimum? Everytime I've been they've never had any, but they had ducks, and they said it was a 12 min for chicks and ducks.

ours is 6chicks and 2 for ducks they are ok on the knowledge i asked for shavings and he actually took me past the pine and pointed me to the cedar which im just amazed with all the bad things ive heard of other tsc that mine is so good and know not to use pine allthough they did have standard rir listed as bantys i saide those are the biggest bantys ive ever seen at a day old they were a little bigger then my 4week old bantys from ideal but i think im gonna start getting chicks from our local feedmill its only a 5minute drive and the lady gave me 3chicks for free when i bought 3 and acted like i wanted more but couldnt afford them shes like you buy those and ill just give you these

Our TSC (rural vt) seems to be semi-knowledgeable... they had everyone in the correct bins, and clean shavings and water and food and ample space. Heat lamps well secured but still, I had to rescue a tiny sebright with gross pasty butt. Only bantam left, and totally clogged... poor baby! It looks like it's going to live... i think. It's eating and drinking and pooping...
