Chick Days Rant

The TSC in Naples, has no clue what chicks are what. I went and they had 6 large bins filled with chicks. On one bin it had 2 signs, one said straight run and can you guess what the other sign said? Yeah that is right...pullets! I asked the guy which were the pullets and which were the straight runs, just to be a smarty pants. Can you believe he said, "I think the ones that look like chipmunks are pullets...the rest are called straight runs". I asked him to show me on the box what these would look like when they grew up. He said,"my guess is as good as his, I only know the pullets from the straight runs".

I then gave him the low down on chickens and the terminology. I explained that these terms are not breeds. He still said the bin contained all the chicks that said pullet and straight run on the boxes they came in. He even showed me the boxes. I finally gave up.

Now all those pullets were mixed with the straight runs. I wonder if people get roosters if they can return them?

I think the only chicks I will get from there would be sexlink.

Oh yeah, bantams are a breed too. That is the official name, it was on the box from the hatchery.

My wife and I was in Atwoods the other day and they some chicks in and the two girls that was putting them into the tubs they were kept in was going "I think this one goes here and lets put these here." We just looked at each other and walked off. Another time thay had rabbits and we asked them if they new what they were (meaning if they new buck or doe) and she said "Black and white?" Of course they Dutch rabbits, but she didn't know. My wife and I just walked laughing to ourselves.

I saw Pekings in a bin at TSC and a lady asked what kind of ducks are these and the guy said "plain white ducks." I said "mam they are pekings "and he said "know sir they are plain white ducks". I said in a nice way , "there is no breed called a plain white duck" He said yes there is my manager said so". I said not so nicely "well your manager is wrong. The lady thanked me and I sent an email to corporate that said if they are going to sell something they should at least know what it is.

I went into our TS yesterday around noon and they had several bins of chicks and 1 bin with ducks..Not one bin had food or water and their bins (especially ducklings) was nasty...they had waterers and feeders, but nothing in them..I would understand a lil more if it had been early morning but this was middle of the day...I saw 1 person working there and she had no idea about them..she was at the register. If they are going to sell fuzzybutts then learn something about them and PLEASE take care of them.

The guy yesterday when I went in told me all the reds were ALWAYS RIRs and the lighter ones were ALWAYS brahmas...
I even gave him a few chances (and hints) to change his answers but he stuck by them..

Wow I'm sorry to hear of that - But really, there was even a whole thread about TSC service and how it is like this.

This is one of the many reasons I don't go to the feedstores for chicks.

This is one of the many reasons I don't go to the feedstores for chicks.

i guess all feedstores are different the 2 in the towns that are like a 10minutes drive at the most from my house all know exactly what they are doing if i ask for barred rock i get barred rock if i ask for something else i get it but i think they just order assortments of herritage breeds and a few sexlinks so what they say they will be getting on the list is just a possibility like when ordering any assortment my tsc was iffy on it not knowing breeds and stuff but they where very helpful but im only buying from feedstore(after i find some aurucana/americana/eastereggers for blue eggs a few costumers want
