Chick eggs moving in incubator but still no hatch!!!!

First timer...
I am hatching white leghorn eggs in a little giant incubator. When I got them half were refridgerated, and all of them were put in the incubator about 24 hours after being played. For most of the Time the temperature has been constant. At lockdown all eggs looked good when candled. On day 20 however the temperature was down to 85. I don't know how long it was like this. Now we are on day 23 and none have pipped. I need help! Did I loose the batch?

Do you know ho long the temperature was down? They may still be all right, just need more time to hatch because of the temperature drop. If you have nothing in another day you could do the water test. Put an egg in a pan of water and see what happens. If the egg moves, the chick is alive.

I think just a few hours, but I'm not sure. I was gone and when I came back it was at 85. Ok...how hot should the water be, and is that a tried and true method? Is it safe?

How many days along was the incubation when this happened and did you measure egg temp which is what is important.

Day 20. And I have a thermometer on top of the eggs, so if that is measuring egg temperature, than yes I did.

I think a few hours of lower temp couldn't kill them. I never use water test, because I also am in doubt if it is safe. I just place the egg on a table and watch it for a while. It should be moving if it is alive. If it is not moving, I check later, because it may be taking a nap. One more tip - dead eggs get cool sooner than live ones. If you leave incubator open for a while, you can feel the temp difference if there are alive and dead eggs.

Really? That seems like it could be bad for the egg. It's already dealt with low temperatures. How long do you leave it out for?

I'm sorry I sent my reply before finishing. The reason egg temp is important rather then air temp is because the chick will produce heat if it's alive. this is why temps increase as incubation periods are further along. If the egg is in the mid 90s it's a good chance it is still alive. hope this is of some help. Good Luck in the bet way.
