I have a little bantam chick that is the single hatch of this one hen. It's not more than a week old right now. It has an eye injury. I'm not sure how it happened or who did it. It was partially closed for a few days and I've just been monitoring but now its fully closed. I let the hens hatch and raise the chicks with the flock. This hen is not the most attentive mother and I did have one once before peck her babies until they were bleeding. I dont know if thats the case here. When it happened before I removed the chicks inside a brooder but there were more than one. Should I remove this chick from mother and flock until he's healed? I'm assuming if I do she wont take him back but im thinking it might get worse if he's left out there. I know chickens are flock animals and removing him may alienate him from the flock. If anyone has been on a similar situation I would appreciate some advice.

I’ve had a similar eye injury with a chick and flushed it with saline daily and applied Terramycin afterward. I might have done twice a day actually.

Brooding a lone chick is no good but my guess is the hen did this if she’s done it before. Can you get some more chicks to raise with it? Removing it might be best

O goodness....poor lil one...hope he gets better....yes I would remove it from the others...the others will more than likely peck at its injury...there is an ointment you can purchase at your local farm store called terramycin (may be able to get from an Atwood's or TSC) not sure. It's pricey but it works. If you think he will be lonely in whatever you house him in give him a lil mirror(so he thinks he has company) and a small stuffed animal to cuddle with.

I dont know if it was this hen in particular because I've sold some and hatched some that have grown up. I could get some more chicks for him and bring them inside. Im working on expanding the coop and having a separate area for introducing new birds that I can move them to when it's done. I just wasn't sure if another chick might peck at it and make it worse. But I suppose a chick wouldn't do as much damage as a full size bird.

Unfortunately I'm in canada and I would need to find a vet and get a prescription for Terramycin. I can get vetericyn spray at my local farm supply.
