Chick fading away? Panting and thin.....

Well, I took a faecal sample to the vet today and there was no cocci but loads of gram negative bacteria. SO they gave me some antibiotic to feed her. I was not sure how to give it to her so I kind of put tiny bits along her beak and waited for her to swallow? Is this right? Next question is - what on earth is going on with her? Would it help to give her some yoghurt or should I wait until she is done with the antibiotic? She had her first dose at about 2:30 pm and I am really praying that this is going to work! She is amazingly tough - still hanging in there. One good thing about this is if she makes it she is going to be pretty tame since she is getting all this extra attention.... Is the oatmeal easier for her to digest? Should I give that to her a couple of times a day ?

Hey Godiva

What is the name of the antibiotic he gave you for her? Just think it would be great to know if I or anyone else runs into this. Also did he tell you what might have caused this? If not, I would definitely call him and ask, or even ask for his best guess? Thanks!

So, so glad to hear she's still hanging in there! I would PM dlhunicorn regarding admistration of the antibiotic. She was so helpful to me when I needed help with a sick one. I haven't had to give antibiotics yet, so I just don't know. You'd think the vet would take the time to explain these things! Either way, that bacteria is getting stomped out and that's good news. I hope she gets better and better every day. And you're right - she'll expect to be held! Yea!! Tame chickens!!!

They mixed up some antibiotic for her. It is called Albon and she gets 0.2 ml twice a day for 10 days. She is already looking much better and it is becoming a mission to get her to sit still so I can administer the antibiotic! I think I am going to have to mix it in some feed because I left this mornings session with my shirt sprayed with tiny droplets of medicine - not sure how much actually went down her throat! I have started calling her honey, so I guess that is going to be her name (I really hope she is a pulllet! Her look is much more pulletish! ) I actually caught her flying up onto the waterer today which would have been unthinkable a day ago, and she is hardly puffed up any more. Not panting anymore and I think she may have gained a little weight as she doesn't feel quite so insubstantial when I pick her up now. Whew! Looks like she may be ok all going well. On a side note, I saw a baby mouse sunning itself next to the box Honey is in! Do you think mouse poop could have made her sick?! I know our workshop has the critters around and I am working on getting rid of them...
