Chick feeder & water:how high out of shavings to place?

I am expecting chicks soon. I was hoping to use sand instead of pine shavings. I suppose it is better for them to eat sand than shavings, but still.... Wathcing this thread with interest!

I put my six TSC peeps in a cooler with sand. Nobody exploded when their feet touched the sand. So far, so good.​

i started out using linen in the brooder (old towels, sheets etc)

i tried paper shavings ONCE, and it was a disaster every 5 minutes so i went back to linen the next day

it's a pain in the butt tho, good thing i have lots of old crap to ruin

@limabean very similar to the teat? on the rabbit waterer so that should do the job.
