Chick grit

I have five chicks that are 3 days old. They are eating medicated feed. I wanted to start chick grit too. Can I just add some to the mason jar feeder and if so how much grit per cup of food? Later I know you do free choice but I saw that it is recommended to add to food at first.

Also they go through a lot of food for such small little fluff balls.

I think it's recommended to add it to food, but I believe the reason is in order to get them to eat it. I've never had a problem getting the chicks to eat the grit. They really seem eager to eat it. If you want to add it to their feed, just sprinkle a little over the top--maybe a tsp or Tbsp. You don't need to measure it. I put some in a small dish or jar lid and set it in the brooder. They take what they want.

I just "sprinkle" - no set amount. I don't give it daily either, just every so often.

Once they get older (like when you switch off starter feed) then grit simply goes on the side for them to take as needed.
