Ok my local TSC doesn't have chick grit (unless they are waiting for another shipment). Do I have any options? Can I just take some sand from my daughters play sand box or has that been treated? or Can I get some small sandy gravel from my driveway?

I really want to stat introducing my 2 1/2 weeks old chicks to some meal worms and lettuce, but I dont dare to unles they have had some grit for a few days. Any suggestions??

I think that the sand from the play-box would be fine. (free choice)

Kk thank you! I was just afraid the play box sand would have chemicals or something in it. I am glad it doesn't....lol my 2 1/2 year old is just gonna have to share some with the chicks.

My birds don't get grit from me, they are free range in the yard and pick it up on their own. When we butchered some a few weeks ago you could see that they picked up grit in the yard just fine.

I would think sand would be fine to use if your birds don't have a yard.

I read on a website that you can give them parakeet gravel/grit. I couldn't find chick grit anywhere. My broody hen hatched 5 chicks, that's what I sprinkle on their starter feed.

starter mash and crumbles usually have some grit in them. I bought some of the parakeet gravel when I first got my chicks but read the ingredients and saw that there was oyster shell in the mix which is high in calcium and a no no for not fully grown birds. I have heard that playsand is not quite as desirable as the contractors sand, which you can get at any of big hardware stores, because it is designed to stick together when it is moist... hence it's great use for building sandcastles.... hope that helps.
