Had a chick hatch over 24 hours ago. Yolk still in 1/2 of shell and embryo attached. Poor guy is trying to walk around with his ball and chain. I thought it would fall of on it's own but it's been over 24 hours and I think he is getting ticked off. He is alone in there as the others have all been moved to the brooder. I do want to get him out soon as I should have some quail start to hatch in next 3 days. Suggestions... do I cut it for him or continue to leave him in the brooder?

First of all make sure it is the yoke sac... It might be just hatching gunk. You will know because what is attached to the chick to the shell will be Extreamly thin. If it is quite thick, it is more than likely the yoke sac.

If it is very thin like fishing line thin, then you can just snip it. If it is thick, then it could be the yoke sac. If it is the yoke sac, then you need to keep it moist. But I have had very very bad results from an exposed yoke sac. If there is any way you can post a pic that would be Very helpful.

It it thin like a fishing line, not sure if you can even see it in the pics. To make matters worse he managed to get yolk on his leg feathers and it has dried to him. I'm soaking him in a bowl of warm water now to loosten it. I'm not at all sure how to put pics on here I guess copy/paste? I'll give that a try! You can see the little string over my finger.

Ok.. clearly didn't work... if anyone can tell me how to put a pic on here I would be more than happy to !

The easiest way here is to look above in the menu.. you can see Index User List.. click on uploads. Then you see a browse button, click it and upload the pic you want to paste.

After it is posted copy and paste the BB code under the picture and paste it on this thread.

i have had a chick hatch and have the egg still connected. It walked around and pulled it's intestines out. That was early in my chicken-hatching career. Now if i see a chick connected to the shell by a thin piece of skin/membrane, i just snip it. i make sure i snip at the thinnest part and never if there is blood present.
