Hi Everyone,

This chick just hatched (within the last half hour), it is a Splash Silkie.

Has anyone every had a chick with a large bump on the head hatch before (as shown in photos below)?

Anyone know what it is?

The chick is acting normal, chirping and lifting it's head and trying to look around. No other symptoms to report.

We have had several hatch from this batch of eggs and so far this is the only one with the large lump on it's head.

It is called a "Vault".

See here: http://www.hattricksilkies.net/articles_vaulted_skull.html

I
personally prefer the vaulted silkies over the non vaulted.

Here is one of your pictures. It is a very large vault. Nothing to worry about.

And here I thought that it would have a tumor or something!

Thank you SundownWaterfowl, Thank You, Thank You!

It's crazy how much you think you know about the birds, something always proves you wrong. I've owned silkies for over 7 years and wasn't aware of the vaulted heads! I better come out of my shell more often!

Thanks again SundownWaterfowl!

So glad I was able to find an answer to this question too. What a relief, I just had one hatched like that and withing minutes was able to ease my mind. Thanks!

I knew before even opening this thread what the "problem" would be.

Many people (including me) find this a very desirable thing. Your chick will grow into a real looker! Most likely show quality.
