Dottie has sadly passed away today. She was not doing so great these past few days, despite starting to eat on her own for the first time last night. She was a week old today. I suppose something internally was going on and she could no longer fight it. I also lost the hen that may have been her mother a few hours earlier than her. She was my sweet little mixed breed hen. I wish there was more I could have done for the both of them. Something to change this outcome. Dottie and Penelope will be deeply missed.

I’m so sorry. You won’t be the first to feel helpless at the loss of a feathered baby. I’m confident they both new they were loved and felt safe with you. I’m so happy to hear the other baby pulled through!

Oh I am sorry You did all you could! The poor little thing would have had quite a struggle trying to figure living out I imagine.

I'm not entirely sure what happened with my hen. She had been having various prolapses a few weeks before, but seemed to have stopped for a week or two before passing. I hope she didn't become egg bound and I just didn't notice, because I didn't see any of her eggs for a while up until her passing.

Penelope was gorgeous! What a horrible day for you! Don't beat yourself up, you have no idea what may have been going on inside her. Chickens can pass without showing any symptoms of what was going on internally and necropsy is the only way we would find out what had been going on. Onwards and upwards from here
