our first chick is hatching! We heard some peeping and there are tiny pieces of egg shells under the egg. The chick is hatching upside down!! We have water in the water channel underneath it so if it's beak gets caught is the floor's holes it will drown. Should I turn it over?

Ok thank you!! I wasn't sure if I would disturb it or hurt it.

I just turned it :) haha! Yes I've seen a video of them doing that and I was wondering if the eggs would be ok :lau

When an egg hatches, the chick usually stays inside until it shoves out all at once and then lays on its belly for a bit. However, the egg sometimes rolls a lot while it's hatching. Why don't you just put paper towels under all your eggs if you're that worried about it?

I like paper towels to! I always worried about a chick gettin a leg stuck in the grates. Plus...its so much easier for clean up!

I use shelf liner. It lets the moisture from the water trays in the bottom through better than paper towels do, gives the chicks more grip with their feet after they hatch, and cleans up easily. It's also reusable if you clean and sanitize it between hatches.
